MADD – Mother Against Drunk Driving

It would be utterly foolish for a person to drive a motor vehicle when he or she is drunk. Driving Under the Influence of alcohol is not only dangerous for the driver, but also for the rest of the people on the road. In simple words, when a person drinks and drive, he or she is simply putting many lives at risk. If you look at the statistics, it will definitely scare you off. In the year 2010, more than 10,000 people lost their lives in road accidents in the United States, because of drunk driving. Fortunately, the scary figures are declining with each passing year, and it has turn out to be possible only due to the hard work of MADD.

What is MADD?

MADD stands for Mothers Against Drunk Driving. It is a non-profit organization active in the United States and its prime objective is to put an end to drunk driving. The organization was founded in the year 1980, on 7th of May. Before we tell you more about its activity and role in preventing drunk driving activities, let is throw some light on its history.

History: Mothers Against Drunk Driving has been established by Candice Lightner after her beloved daughter was killed by a drunk driver. She was 13 years old. Lightner is from Irvin, Texas. After the death of her daughter, Lightner started an initiative to spread awareness regarding the ill effects of drunk driving. In 1983, a movie about Lightner provided the much needed publicity to the group of MADD. Soon it attracted the attention of Frank R. Lautenberg, the Senator from New Jersey. Since, he was also completely against drunk driving; therefore he openly supported the objective of MADD. Unfortunately, Lightner left her organization as she felt that the objective of MADD is turning out to be something different. According to her, MADD became more active towards reducing alcohol use than reducing DUI.

As of now, the organization is working actively to stop consumption of alcohol during driving and also underage drinking. The organization is running several campaigns to deal with the same.
